april glossybox canada 2012

glossybox was late to arrive again this month but i didn't really mind since i generally like my boxes to be spaced out throughout the month. i also heard great things about the april box so i was hopeful that it would be worth the wait. when i picked up the box, i immediately noticed that it was heavy - jam packed with goodies! so the box seemed very very promising... unfortunately, i have to say that i was slightly disappointed this month - maybe because my expectations were so high. here is my video unboxing... please scroll down for a list of the products.

here is what i received (in order of appearance in the video) - note that this section will be updated as i use the products:

1. aveeno positively radiant daily moisturizer with spf 15

while i love aveeno products and i am happy to have received this moisturizer, i still have mixed feelings because (a) we received an aveeno moisturizer from glossybox just last month and (b) aveeno isn't what i would consider a luxury brand. that being said, i am sure i will enjoy using this product!

full size and sample size // 120 mL // $22.99

2. wella brilliance conditioner for fine to normal coloured hair

i've seen the wella brand included in a few beauty boxes but i've never tried it myself - a wella product was actually included in the first glossybox but i was one of the lucky ones who receive the essie nail polish instead. the conditioner smells really nice - i would have liked to receive both the shampoo and conditioner but i guess glossybox wanted to change things up since the shampoo was already sampled in the february box.

impressions: the conditioner has a very sweet scent - a little too sweet for my liking. in terms of effectiveness, i thought the product was fine but i didn't notice an improvement over other conditioners. maybe if i had the shampoo as well? i would not repurchase the wella conditioner as i preferred the redken and free your mane samples - those both made my hair feel amazing!

full size // 250 mL // $13.99
sample size // 30 mL // approximate value of $1.68

3. wella brilliance treatment for fine to normal coloured hair

i was a little confused by this product because there were no tips or directions on how to use this treatment on the glossybox card, on the wella insert, or on the product itself. from the little research i've done on this product, it appears this product is similar to a hair mask. i've never used a hair mask before so i am excited to try this!

full size // 150 mL // $13.99
sample size // 25 mL // approximate value of $2.33

4. marcelle xtension plus mascara in black

we received a full size mascara in our glossybox this month. this looks like a nice product; however, since i no longer use mascara (due to my lash extensions), i will be giving this away.

update: a few months after my original post, i have started using mascara again! i like the marcelle's mascara - it really works to lengthen and volumize my lashes. i would add, however, that it does not curl my lashes. it also clumps really easily so i have to be very careful to make sure i (a) don't have too much product on the brush and (b) don't go over my lashes too many times.

full size and sample size // 9 mL // $12.50

5. elizabeth grant skin care shower gel in island coconut

another full size product! this shower gel smells really nice - exactly like sweet coconut. this is the second time i've received an elizabeth grant product from glossybox, the first sample being the moisturizing stick from the february box... which i loved. i am somewhat excited to try this product but i have a lot of bath products i still need to use up.

impressions: i love coconut but i don't really gravitate towards the scent so i was surprised by how much i enjoyed this shower gel! the coconut scent was perfect - it actually smelled very natural like fresh coconut. the texture of the shower gel was also lovely - it lathered into a very nice, light foam. i would consider repurchasing this but after i use up all my bath products.

full size and sample size // 240mL // $20

6. marcelle bb cream beauty balm in light to medium

this was our bonus sample this month - i am excited to try this!

impressions: i am absolutely loving this bb cream. the sample packet actually had enough product for 3-4 uses on me - a little goes a long way. it evened out my skin tone and provided a dewy (but not shiny) finish. it has an interesting cooling effect when i apply it and feels very light on the skin. my complexion looked more radiant and the bb cream lasted all day... it was really quite amazing. i would consider repurchasing this product; however, i wish it contained sunscreen. i'm going to do some research into other bb creams before i decide but this one would be a strong contender.

full size // 45 mL // $22.95
sample size // 1 mL // approximate value of $0.51

there was no personalization on the card this month nor were there any labels included. nevertheless, i still think glossybox has the highest quality packaging. i look forward to receiving the boxes so i can use them for storage or gift giving. however, i have to admit i was slightly underwhelmed by this month's glossybox for a couple of reasons. first, three of the brands are repeats from previous months - and since this is only the third month glossybox has been in canada, i feel it is very early to have so many repeating brands. second, i don't really feel any of the samples were luxury brands. i am happy with the size of the samples though - three full size products is amazing. also, the value of the glossybox in dollar terms has been consistently very good from month to month.

// approximate value of the products in the april 2012 glossybox: $60.01 //

did you receive the april glossybox and, if so, what did you think of it?

glossybox canada subscriptions are available for $15 per month including shipping and tax, so just a few dollars more than glymm and topbox. it promises a minimum of 5 luxury samples and will throw in a 6th sample from time to time. if you wish to join glossybox through my invitation, i will earn glossydots and send heaps of good karma your way.

ftc: i redeemed my glossydots to receive the april glossybox at no charge.

favourite things swap

i recently participated in a favourite things swap, hosted by linny's vault. this was my first swap ever and i had no idea what to expect. the theme was "my favourite things" and we had a spending limit of $15... i had a ton of fun picking out a few of my faves for my swap partner and was so excited to see what her faves would be. ohmygosh, keltie totally spoiled me with a package stuffed with her favourite things!!! she wrapped up each of the items in sunny yellow tissue paper and attached a little note about why each one is her fave. i loved the personal touch!

of course, i opened up the biggest item first. :) keltie got me a smart planet double wall insulated reusable cold drink cup. i was ecstatic because i had it on my never-ending to-do list to buy something similar. i've been meaning to stop spending a ridiculous $7 a day on booster juice and make my own smoothies at home instead... so this really was the perfect gift. keltie also got me a black moleskine notebook, which was actually one of my favourite things too! i love that the one she got me has pages with grid lines.

next, keltie got me 4 packs of excel gum. not only do i love gum, i also loved her little note, which included a line from sixteen candles. yesss, sixteen candles was one of my favourite movies growing up. and now i feel like watching it again. :)

i also love the cute little sephora buffing block. especially because it includes the uses for each of the sides. my current buffing block doesn't identify the different sides and, no lie, i actually used the file on my nail bed once, which left little scratches all over my nails. i thought to myself, yes i'm a dunce but it would still be great if the sides were labeled, haha.

the last items in my swap package were two nivea lip balms. i am absolutely obsessed with lip balm but, oddly enough, i have never tried the nivea brand. i cannot wait to give these a try. i always have a minimum of 4 lip balms near me at any given time. i wish i were joking.

my first swap was a super fun experience! keltie, thank you, thank you so much for being an awesome swap buddy! i love that all your favourites are so useful - it's almost like you read my mind. :) also a huge thanks to lin for hosting such a well organized swap event!

blush pretty beauty board

my friend and i went to an amazing event last weekend called the beauty board, which was organized by stephanie of blush pretty. the event featured amazing food, mancarons, drinks, and music. best of all was the extremely diverse representation of brands! all the participants got to be beauty editors for the day, trying out new products, chatting with the vendors and each other, and providing feedback on little cards that would be turned in at the end of the evening in exchange for a huge swag bag! this was the best event i've been to in a long time - it completely exceeded my expectations.

there were a ton of brands showcased at the beauty board and i was super excited to try out a whole bunch of different products i had never seen in stores. most of the vendors had products available for purchase at discounted prices so it was a great opportunity to take home a few extra goodies. not only that, but at the end of the event, we were all provided with personalized swag bags, which were chock full of amazing products.

for your viewing pleasure, i have also included tons of photos of the items that were in my swag bag, along with the items that i purchased.

me with the incomparable sommer from flirt custom lash studio! sommer was kind enough to provide me with a relash at the event and we got to catch up on our monthly chats. :)

other brands that were at the beauty board included apothekerri beauty (i ate the delicious cake lollipop she provided us in our swag bag), stella + dot, silpada, featherband, and Jessie Boy Blue.

this event was so much fun! i believe the next beauty board will be in october and, if you love trying new products, enjoying great food and drink, networking with like-minded people in an awesome atmosphere, you should definitely check it out!

april glymm box 2012 - unboxing

UPDATE (April 2013): Please read my most recent post on Glymm before ordering from this company.

this is the first glymm box that i have found to be really disappointing. i like the variety of products included and i like the brands, but glymm really fell short with the size of the samples this month. it's too bad because i feel that glymm has the most leverage with the brands since the online boutique can be used to drive sales. with that said, here is my video unboxing:

here are the contents of my april glymm box (in order of appearance in the video):

1. free your mane sulfate free hydrating shampoo & conditioner

i enjoy receiving shampoo & conditioner samples because they are so useful; however, i prefer little bottles because i find these packages messy and very difficult to open. this is the smallest sample of shampoo & conditioner i've received in any beauty box so i was very disappointed in the non-deluxe size. regardless, i am excited to try this brand as the entire line of products is sulphate and paraben free.

impressions: the shampoo & conditioner samples were barely enough for one use now that my hair is a little longer. i did not fancy the scent (can't place it - it's like nothing i've ever smelled before) but my hair did feel great after using the products. i would not repurchase this product due to the scent.

full size // 300 mL each // $16 each
sample size // 7.4 mL each // approximate value of $0.80

2. lucia guest soap in no. 6 wild ginger & fresh fig

again, this is a very small sample. i love soap, the packaging is lovely, and the scent is nice... but i can't seem to get over the size. nevertheless, i will give the soap a try and report back.

full size // 8 soaps // $17.50
sample size // 1 soap // approximate value of $2.19

3. mai couture social gloss in g'vinity

this is the second time we've received a sample from mai couture - the first time being a small sample of blush / bronzing sheets in the february glymm box. without a doubt, this is my favourite item in the box. in fact, this full size lip gloss saved the box for me. i love lip gloss and i am excited to try this one. the colour is called g'vinity, which is a cocktail i have never tried. the colour is a shimmery neutral beige.

impressions: i like this lip gloss but the colour is not flattering on its own. it looks good layered on top of a lip colour, which is how i've been wearing it. it's quite long lasting and has a pleasant scent with no flavour. it does claim to be lip plumping, which i did not notice visually; however, my lips did tingle lightly for a short while. i probably would not repurchase this product as my favourite sula lip glosses are only a fraction of the price.

full size and sample size // 5 mL // $28

4. atelier cologne in orange sanguine

fragrance is not my favourite sample to receive due to my scent allergies but glymm does not sample perfumes often so i was okay with it. buuuut, again, the size was so small. it's one thing if there is one small size sample included in the box... but three? i do like the little postcard because, well, i love postcards.

here is the official description of the fragrance from the atelier cologne website:

top notes... blood orange - bitter orange
heart notes... jasmine - geranium from south africa
base notes... amber woods - tonka beans - sandalwood

i like this fragrance but still prefer the ysl parisienne i received in my december glymm box.

impressions: i've been wearing the orange sanguine fragrance for the last couple of days and i like it. oddly enough, i don't really smell the top notes (i.e., the orange) - instead, my silly nose detects the floral scents and perhaps some of the base notes. i can't really tell but this fragrance seems less citrus-y to me the more i wear it - not that that's a bad thing because i like complex fragrances. that being said, i would still choose ysl parisienne as my signature scent.

full size // 30 mL // $60
sample size // unknown // unknown

5. $100 gift certificate towards nume professional styling tools & hair extensions

this was our "bonus" sample. the first few times glymm provided us with promo codes, i didn't mind it so much because i had been planning to make a purchase anyway. but it's starting to get old. we received the nume feather extensions in the march glymm box, which was great, but i don't really have a desire to purchase more.

// approximate value of the products in the april 2012 glymm box: $30.99 not including the nume gift certificate //

please let me know your thoughts if you received a glymm box this month!

ftc: i paid for this box and nothing was sent to me for free.

ten on tuesday

yay, it's that time of the week again! linked up as always via linny's vault. :)

1) i ordered a ton of books from amazon recently. for a long while, i had sworn off buying books and instead used the public library system. my reasons were two-fold: (a) i was trying to tackle the clutter in our condo and (b) the public library is free. but then i kept missing my holds because i would forget to pick them up. plus sometimes it took me way waay waaay longer than three weeks to finish a book. i'm back to buying!

2) the wind nearly knocked me over on monday. it was disgusting to have dust and dirt blow into my eyes, nose, mouth, and hair on my walk home. bleh!

3) my boss saw me on tv eating a hot dog when i was at the jays game last week.

4) hooray, i sent out the package for my swap buddy! i hope it arrives safely. part of me is terrified she won't like any of my favourite things.

5) i went to my first ever beauty board on sunday and i loved it! lots more info coming soon. :)

6) finally went ahead and submitted a custom order for these leather bag charms of truffle & lulu. i was expecting to see the order in a couple of weeks but beon of leatherprince had my order ready in less than 24 hours! the designs in the shop are super cute but i didn't see anything that looked close enough to truffle & lulu so i went the custom route. i can't wait to receive them!

7) i came down with a small cold so i decided to skip our condo's annual general meeting and just sleep it off. instead of sleeping, i recorded haul videos all night and watched the voice. hey, i know my priorities.

8) crossing my fingers and toes for nice weather on sunday - i'm doing a photoshoot for one of my favourite families so rain & wind would suck even more than usual.

9) finally broke down and purchased a few products (three lip glosses and a nail polish) from a drug store brand called essence cosmetics, which is relatively new in canada. i am loving the products... and the prices!!!

10) one of the items in my 101 in 1001 is to submit a secret to postsecret. this video reminded me that i still haven't done it.

{what i wore} menswear inspired

another monthly dinner! starting with march, my friend and i decided we were going to try to come up with a theme for our outfits - just to change things up and make it a little more challenging. this month's theme was menswear inspired. here is my interpretation!

here is what i wore:

- denim jacket (old navy)
- calvin klein slim fit tie (borrowed from hubby)
- black halter top (h&m)
- fitted black vest (old)
- spanx black pencil skirt (talize)
- leopard pumps (sam edelman)
- balenciaga city bag
- oversized shell studs (hawaii)
- michael kors rose gold runway watch (redeemed using air miles)

{what's on my face}

- two faced smoky eye palette
- nyc blushable creme stick in big apple blush
- urban decay afterglow glide-on cheek tint in indecent
- annabelle blush in pronto
- revlon lip butter in creamsicle
- stila lip glaze in apricot

my friend and i went to black hoof for dinner and i found the food to be delicious! black hoof is a share-plate type dining experience but we decided to just order our own dish. my friend had the duck & black bean. i tried a piece of the cabbage (i loooove cabbage) and it was delectably pickled - i could have eaten an entire plate of it as i love pickled vegetables. my friend liked her dish but found the flavours to be too strong/competing so she likely would not order it again. oh, and her mustache necklace (above photo) is sooo cute!

i am not into mushrooms, fois gras, sweetbreads, tongue, tripe, etc.; however, i do love tartare so i ordered that. this is the second time i've had horse tartare and black hoof's version was spicy and mixed with hickory sticks... mmm, yummy!

we shared a dessert - if i remember correctly, it was olive oil cake with meyer lemon foam, mini meringues, toasted pistachio, and freeze dried raspberries. something along those lines. it was super duper delicious. i couldn't get over it.

after dinner, we snapped a few quick photos and my friend said we should make funny faces. she loves to make silly faces because she is very good at them. i, on the other hand, totally suck. my funny faces always end up looking like this... bleh.

to close off, i had a lovely youtube subscriber ask me recently for some tips on how to make friends. maybe i'll do a best friend tag to this effect but, in the meantime, i wanted to mention that i am definitely not an expert with this. now that i'm older, i think being yourself goes a long way. basically, it is important to realize that there are some people in this world you will click with, some you like as acquaintances but don't want to be good friends with, and some that don't click with you at all. there may even be some that you wish you clicked with or vice versa but somehow the friendship never blossoms. it's important to be true to yourself and not force anything. i find that my closest friendships developed over time, slowly but surely. when you meet someone you click with - whether it be at school, at work, through family or friends, or at an extracurricular activity or class - be open, honest, reliable, and trustworthy... and i think the rest will fall into place. i know that's a little brief but i hope it helps somewhat! :)

april topbox 2012

very happy again with this month's topbox. :)

here is what i received (in order of appearance in the video):

1. principessa beauty notte breeze dry shampoo

i love love love this dry shampoo so i am so happy to have received this. the scent is great and it works wonders soaking up all the oil from my roots. i recently recorded a how to apply powder dry shampoo video using this particular product (i purchased the full size after seeing this sample included in the january topbox - my subscription started in february) so check it out if you would like some tips in that regard. :)

note: for the value of this product, i used the actual price of the "mini" size that is currently available for sale on the principessa beauty website. i believe this is a new size as i have never seen it before. there is also a larger full size product, which is 125 g for $24, but i am trying to use the closest size available for sale when calculating the value.

mini size and sample size // 30 g // $12

2. benefit the porefessional

yay, a benefit product! i have only tried this product on the back of my hand but i was impressed with how smoothly the product applied and how it appeared to smooth out the skin on the back of my hand. i will try this product on my face tomorrow morning and report back on my thoughts. :)

impressions: i like how this product applies and also the scent but i did not really notice a difference with the appearance of my pores.

full size // 22 mL // $34
sample size // 7.5 mL // approximately $11.59

3. misa nail lacquer in polka dot bikini

very happy with receiving a nail polish! however, my bottle is kind of gunked up under the lid, which makes me a little worried that it's been opened and swatched. regardless, i am enjoying the colour and can't wait to try it on my nails. i've seen misa nail lacquers available for purchase at trade secrets and there is an impressive line up of colours. i was thinking about trying one but never really got around to taking the plunge so i was excited to receive this in my topbox. we also received a 20% off coupon, which expires june 30, 2012.

impressions: this nail colour applies a really sheer pink but i really love how it looks on my nails. it's very feminine and subtle and flattering. it's also perfect for the office. i need more nail polish like i need a hole in the head but i would definitely repurchase this brand... i'm planning to pop into trade secrets to drool over the colours.

full size & sample size // 15 mL // $8.99

4. bella pella tropical flowers body lotion

although they're not my favourite, i don't mind receiving moisturizers in my beauty boxes. bella pella is a canadian company based in montreal and i believe topbox has sampled a bar soap in a previous box. unfortunately, the scent of the tropical flowers lotion is a little too strong for me. i'll probably try this product on my legs rather than anywhere too close to my nose. due to the scent, i would not repurchase this exact product; however, depending on the formulation, i might be interested in trying other bella pella products.

impressions: the formulation is nice but the scent is too strong for me so i would not repurchase this product.

full size // 175 mL // $15.95
sample size // 30 mL // approximately $2.73

5. cargo blu-ray pressed powder

we received a tiny sample of this as part of a "sponsored ad" on the topbox product card. i love pressed powders so i am excited to try this. it is described in the ad as being developed for high definition filming - the ingredients are supposed to reduce redness and hide fine lines. in my video, i talked about blotting the product onto my face but i think i will try to apply this with a brush instead. yes, that would be much more civilized.

impressions: there was enough powder on the ad for 3 uses for me. the powder is ok but i didn't feel it was as good as my current physician's formula powder. i had high expectations as i had never tried an hd powder - it seemed a little heavy and prone to caking. i will not be purchasing this product.

full size // 8 g // $32
sample size // negligible // nil

this month's topbox also featured a recycling theme so the regular floral-esque tube was replaced with a regular cardboard tube with beauty product silhouettes / stencils printed onto the actual tube. i actually prefer this type of tube and hope to see more of the stencil type designs on future topboxes. when i first learned of topbox and saw the packaging, i thought it would be really neat if the tubes were different every month. anyway, i believe this is a limited edition topbox so the design is unlikely to recur next month.

edited to add: so i just read the green card included in the topbox and it says we can request the plain cardboard box with the printed design instead of the "regular" topbox. i am definitely going to do that!

i have to admit that, aside from the new tube design and a little information card we received in the box, i'm not sure how the recycling theme carried through to the products. maybe that was never the intention but it would have been nice to see some eco friendly, organic, or cruelty free products highlighted. i realize some of the products included may already be, say, cruelty free but there was no information in this regard contained in the topbox. i will say that i love that there is very clear information as to where to purchase the products on the card this month - i hope this continues.

// approximate value of the products in the april 2012 topbox: $35.31 //

if you received the april topbox, i would love to know what you thought!

ftc: i paid for this box and nothing was sent to me for free.

ten on tuesday

linking up with linny's vault for ten on tuesday... yes, again! :)

1) so excited... i only have one more item to purchase for my swap buddy! hoping to pick it up tomorrow. please let it still be there.

2) received last minute tickets to the ballgame from my boss today! he has great "in the action" seats so i was beyond excited. we stuffed ourselves with hot dogs, turkey wraps, popcorn, and ice cream. it was sickening. great game though.

3) a whole bunch of food trucks are popping up at bay and adelaide for lunch tomorrow. this makes me wish i still worked in the financial district.

4) i just finished reading the entire hunger games series for the second time. i'm not quite sure what to do with myself now.

5) super excited that i potentially have two beauty boxes arriving this week! i received my shipping notification for topbox today and apparently glymm will be shipping this week too. :) no word on glossybox yet.

6) that awkward moment when you're not sure whether you should finish your ten on tuesday post, paint your nails, or just go to bed. i guess i'll finish the post.

7) i saw this weekly post-it planner thingamabob on one of my favourite blogs today. me likey, me wanty.

(source: poketo)

8) instead of feasting on turkey and ham, i ate poutine on friday, saturday, and sunday of the easter long weekend.

9) for the 3rd or 4th time in my life, i have officially quit caffeine. i've even cut out my favourite smoothie from booster juice, mind over matcha. instead i'm drinking pomegranate punch.

10) i can't believe there are still 3 more work days to go this week. someone shoot me. on a more positive note, i filed our taxes yesterday so i only have one more take-home project in the month of april and i'll be free to enjoy the spring and summer!

2012 goals // march update

1. photo-a-day project of hubby and me.
- missed one day in march.
- 97%.

- i'm happy to report that i am loving this challenge! so much so that i may extend it past 100 days... stay tuned for my april update.
- 100%.

3. savings goal + rewards!

- i cheated a little and purchased 8 nail polish from the china glaze hunger games collection but i am still counting that as one beauty product.
- 75%.

5. one litre of water per day.
- minor setback this month because i am drinking less but it's because i've been eating more fruits and vegetables so i'm less thirsty.
- overall, i think that's a definite plus. :)
- 75%.

6. figure out the mess that is my hair.
- in march, i learned to do a side swept loose curls look as seen in my how to cut the perfect off-the-shoulder t-shirt video and also the little bouffant i'm sporting in this video.

7. decorate, de-clutter & re-organize.
- we put up a little cubby system for all my little knickknacks and supplies.

- 100%.

1. lady ellen pro-10 styling clips
2. urban decay after glow glide-on cheek tint in indecent

4. revlon colorburst lip butter in creamsicle
5. sula lip gloss in beautiful stranger (this might be a repeat)
6. sula lip gloss in i'm so lucky

9. julep nail vernis in portia

thanks for watching!

ten on tuesday

yay, it's tuesday again! that means it's time for ten on tuesday. linked up on linny's vault. :)

1. i wore bright nail polish to work for the first time in years. i felt so many eyes on my fingers during a meeting with our external partners today but whatevs - it was probably all in my head. coral/pink nails don't mean i'm incompetent or unprofessional. it just means i'd rather be at the beach.

2. totally forgot we have a long weekend coming up. that's so unlike me. i'm known at the office for knowing exactly when all the holidays will occur... at least a year in advance.

3. raw oysters with a squeeze of lemon and heaped with freshly grated horseradish is my newest obsession.

4. dang, i had a girl crush on xtina last night. hubby thought i was weird because i said how good i thought she looked on the voice (both during the live show and in rehearsals). ok, not because i said it but because i kept saying it throughout the 2 hour show.

5. i've been going to a lot of movies lately. 21 jump street was better than expected. but i also thought that about mirror mirror. don't judge.

6. i couldn't figure out why i've been breaking out lately until i realized i've eaten no less than a pound of mini eggs in the span of about a week. no joke. yet i continue to eat them - even as i type this blog post.

7. truffle, our bunny, only lets my hubby hold him. he will not tolerate being held by me. however, he always chooses me when he wants to be pet... which is very often because he's a big suck who loves to be doted upon.

8. when lulu was a baby, i would give her a treat for looking at the camera. now, whenever i pick up the camera, she stares right into the lens and poses. what i love most about her is that she is always so happy to see me.

9. my lips have been peeling lately but i haven't changed up any of my lip products. it seems like this happens whenever the seasons change. it's particularly horrible because i pick my lips until they bleed.

10. this makes me feel weak and inadequate. especially 0:40 to 0:45.
