October 2012 Starbox - by Starlooks

The October Starbox had a Halloween theme... more specifically a Masquerade theme! I was very excited when this was announced on the Starlooks website and Facebook page. As with previous months, the box was shipped in a bubble mailer from Los Angeles. It was shipped on October 20 and I received it here in Toronto on October 29.

The box is different every month - for October, we received a matte black box with the Starlooks logo/name/website in purple. The box had a skinny silver elastic bow on it, which I've been using as a hairband when I put on my makeup! :) The products were wrapped in purple tissue paper.

Before I get into the products, Starlooks included a card promoting the December box, which will include a 15 shade eye shadow palette (listed as a $99 value on the website). There appear to be quite a few shades shown on the website so I hope I like the colours I receive. It's not clear whether this will be counted as one item in the December Starbox or whether this will be the only item in the December Starbox (i.e., it might be counted as 15 items). If you are interested in subscribing, it might be worthwhile to do so in time to receive the December Starbox... I believe the cut-off date is November 30.

Here is what we received in the October Starbox:

1. Quartz Crystals

As with previous months, small quartz crystals are included in every Starbox. These crystals are supposed to attract energy and help maintain focus. The other idea is that subscribers can collect them in a glass jar to eventually build a brush holder. I received 2 small crystals this month but I still only have 4 crystals towards my jar... it's going to take a while to have enough to make a brush holder. Once again, I didn't take a photo of the little crystals this month so I've used a screenshot from my video.

2. Eye Rock Eye Tattoo

Starlooks includes a little gift in every month's Starbox. In October, we received Eye Rock Eye Tattoos. I was half excited about this but I didn't really like the one I received. It's very colourful. Most of the other eye tattoos I saw were black and looked like lace - I think I would have preferred one of those. Regardless, I will give this a try. I may only use the top piece of the tattoo (i.e., remove the portion that would go below my lower lash line) as I think it would look more flattering.

3. Eye Pencil in Gold Dust // 2.4 g // $8

This eye pencil is a really pretty yellow gold colour. I tried this pretty much all around my eye - on the upper lash line, lower lash line, and inner corners. When I put my eye shadow on top of the eye liner, I noticed that the gold colour of the eye pencil really warmed up the eye shadow and give it a slightly different dimension. Overall, I wish the eye liner were a little more creamy but I still really like it.

I wanted to share some of Starlooks' photos from the October Looksbook. The photography is absolutely AH-MAZING and so is the hair, make-up, and overall styling. I really really love these previews because it's fun to guess what products will be included and also to get some inspiration on how to use the products once we receive them. This is how Starlooks used the eye pencil in the October Looksbook preview. I love this bronzy, dewy look.

4. Pigment in Posh // 2.8 g // $12

There were two different pigments sent out to subscribers this month but both were very similar shades of purple. I received Posh and the other shade sent out was Peddle. This is the first time I've used a pigment and I was surprised at how easy it was to apply. I really thought I would make a big mess. The colour applied on top of the Starlooks primer (from my September Starbox) was incredibly bright and vibrant. This is a lovely product.

Here is how Starlooks used the pigment. I like how the model has a bit spattered on her shoulder as well. Gaaaah, I love this photo so much.

5. Lipstick in Masquerade // 3.8 g // $11

I am currently having a love affair with lip products so I was very happy to receive a lipstick. We received a very pretty red lipstick with some copper/gold undertones. The formulation is very nice; however, I didn't find the colour very long lasting. I really like the packaging for the Starlooks lipsticks. I like seeing a rim of colour on the base and the tube snaps shut really nicely.

This is how Starlooks styled the lipstick. I love how the gold eye liner complements the gold in the lipstick. Also, did you notice the masks/props used in the photos matches the products we received? I love the continuity! :)

I am quite happy with the October Starbox! We got an interesting collection of products in an eclectic range of colours. I would not wear all of these products in one look (just not for me) but I really like the combination of (a) the gold eye liner with the red lipstick and (b) the gold eye liner with the purple pigment. This is a relatively pricy subscription service when you consider the shipping charge but I've been really enjoying the products so I will stay subscribed for the time being.

// Approximate value of the products in the October 2012 Starbox: $31 (not including the Eye Rock Eye Tattoo) //
