july 2012 glossybox canada review

this is the latest i've ever received my monthly glossybox. it arrived on august 1st and i promptly opened it up and tried all the products. it appears that there were 3 variations of the july glossybox - mine was a v2. as with previous months, there is a strong drug store representation in this box. v2 contained 3 full size products; however, this month's box had a significantly lower value than previous glossyboxes.

here is what i received (in the order listed on the glossybox card):

1. zoya nail polish in kimber

i was pleasantly surprised to receive this product. i've been wanting to try a zoya polish and this one is really pretty. i was also very pleased that this is a polish from the 2012 summer collection - i find a lot of the polishes included in the subscription boxes are not from current seasons. i would have preferred a polish from the "beach" collection (wednesday is really drawing me) but i have so many cream polishes... i guess it's good to try something different.

impressions: even though i'm not a huge fan of shimmer or metallic polishes (and zoya claims that the surf line is both), i am very happy with this nail polish. it applies like a dream and is fully opaque in 2 coats... i think i could have gotten away with just one coat. the colour is very very pretty and it seems more complex than your ordinary shimmer polish. must be the metallic effect.

full size and sample size // 15 mL // $8
personal rating // 3 // loved the product - would repurchase

2. alessandro international pedix feet heel rescue balm

i was surprised we received this because we very recently received a foot cream in the may glossybox. this was definitely one of those products that i toss aside at first but gradually grows on me. as i did more research, i learned that it is a german brand and this same sample was included in the german and u.s. glossyboxes. i like receiving samples from brands that are new-to-me and i also like that we received the same sample as some other countries.

impressions: i am really really enjoying this foot cream! it is very moisturizing but not greasy. i also love the smell! there is a sweet scent to it and it reminds me of melons... cantaloupe? honeydew? everyone else seems to smell mint and, yes, i do smell that too now but the sweet scent still lingers. it smells so familiar, like a type of asian candy perhaps?

full size // 100 mL // $19.95
sample size // 30 mL // approximate value of $5.99
personal rating // 2 // liked the product - might or might not repurchase

3. john frieda frizz-ease sheer solution

last month, i went for a digital perm and it literally did nothing to my hair except create a slight body wave and make my hair more dry. my hair is a bit frizzier than it was before and i've been thinking of buying an anti-frizz product. [part of me loves the look of frizzy hair so the anti-frizz was just for work so i can maintain a somewhat professional appearance.] basically, this sample came at a really good time. it is a small sample at 10 mL but you only need 10 drops (give or take) with each use. this is one of those products you have to shake up before use because there are 2 layers of liquid.

impressions: this product seems to be working well for me. i've only used it once but my hair felt noticeably softer the following morning. it has been feeling quite dry and frizzy due to the perm. i like that this product is lightweight - my hair doesn't feel greasy or weighed down. i used 15 drops because i felt 10 was not enough for my hair.

full size // 60 mL // $14.99
sample size // 10 mL // approximately $2.50
personal rating // 2 // liked the product - might or might not repurchase

4. burt's bees lip shimmer in strawberry

i've purchased a few of these products in the past and i actually still have one in the champagne shade. i loved the concept but i hated the shimmer! it got everywhere and i thought it made my lips an odd colour no matter what shade i tried. nevertheless, i was curious to try the product again to see if the formulation has changed.

impressions: i don't like wearing this product by itself because i feel it washes me out - maybe it's all the shimmer? however, when i layered a lipstick on top, i thought it looked really nice so i will continue to use this product. the lip shimmer has a strong peppermint scent and makes my lips tingle... neither of which i mind.

full size and sample size // 2.6 g // $5.99
personal rating // 2 // liked the product - might or might not repurchase

5. dove softening crème body wash

even though i have pretty much used up all my existing body wash, i was not too excited to receive another one in my glossybox. i read some great reviews about this product though so that got me a little more interested in trying it out. this product claims to give you visibly more beautiful skin in just one week.

impressions: i've used this body wash once and i really love its soft texture. it has a lotion-like consistency that foams up very nicely. the only thing i didn't like about this product was the smell - it has the standard dove scent but i found it overpowering. nevertheless, i will continue to use it to see if i see a difference in my skin.

full size and sample size // 200 mL // $5.99
personal rating // 2 // liked the product - might or might not repurchase

6. beauty so clean sanitizer wipes

i somehow neglected to take a standalone photo of these wipes. i received this product previously in the inaugural glossybox in february but i used them all up so i was okay with receiving a few more.

impressions: i try to use these wipes when i remember and i really like using them to clean my tweezers and earrings but other than that, this product doesn't really do anything for me.

full size // 48 wipes // $12.50
sample size // 4 wipes // approximately $1.04
personal rating // 2 // liked the product - might or might not repurchase

overall, i was not very impressed with the july glossybox. to be quite honest, when i first opened up the box, i probably would have been disappointed if it hadn't been for the nail polish. yes, the nail polish saved it for me.

// approximate value of the products in the july 2012 glossybox: $29.51 //

if you received a glossybox, what version did you receive? what nail polish colour did you get? does it bother you that glossybox is still including so many drug store brands?

ftc: i paid for this box and nothing was sent to me for free.

  2. I think I will be getting the same version of box as you, but I don't know because it's at the post office and today is the only day I have off and it's SUNDAY so it's closed! The suspense is killing me!

  3. I was a bit upset when I saw what V1 got compared to us. A full sized hair product, whatever it was and the Burt's Bees while your version got the very small hair product with Burt's bees and mine got a half-sized hair product with a tiny cream sample and no Burt's Bees... But since the Frizz-Ease product is working out so well on my daughter's hair and the Alessandro cream on my feet, toss in the nice nail polish and I'm a happy person!

    1. yeah, i wasn't too impressed by the difference in dollar value either. it looks like the V2 and V3 boxes were around the same dollar value... but both were a lot less than the V1. i'm not really into *rolling the dice* as to which box i receive... i don't mind if the colours are different (like the nail polish) or if the products are slightly different as long as the overall value is about the same. hopefully, this won't continue in future months! that being said, i do like the foot cream and i love the nail polish so i'm going to give it a couple more months.

  4. Well, it's significantly better than the August Glymm bag that I just opened...

    1. oh crap... i'm worried about this one. i haven't received mine yet and i'm very tempted to read reviews (especially since i clicked on one yesterday by accident) but i'm going to hold off. i wasn't impressed with the preview of the product shown on the glymm facebook page.

    2. You're definitely right to be worried! This bag is making me seriously consider canceling Glymm altogether.
Looking forward to your review! Hope you get your bag soon :)
